As an individual living in the UK, you are only eligible to apply for a basic DBS check.
The individual DBS check is carried out by the Disclosure & Barring Service for citizens from England and Wales. If you’re living in Scotland, your search will be carried out by Disclosure Scotland.
What Jobs Require an Enhanced DBS Check for an Individual?
The following sectors (and more) will necessitate an enhanced DBS check to be obtained by individuals:
- Volunteer roles
- Healthcare
- Education
- Elderly care
There are Three Different Types of Individual DBS Checks:
- Basic DBS Check
This is the only type of individual check you can get without the need for employer verification. The basic DBS check will result in a certificate showing any unspent criminal convictions on your record.
- Standard DBS Check
Your employer/organisation will need to verify your application for a standard DBS check. It will include disclosure of spent and unspent criminal convictions, as well as any cautions or warnings.
- Enhanced DBS Check
An organisation will apply for an enhanced DBS check for individuals if their role involves working with children or vulnerable adults. This check provides full disclosure of spent and unspent criminal convictions, cautions, warnings, reprimands, and any mention on relevant police or barred lists.
Is it Possible to Get an Enhanced DBS Check Online for Individuals?
Standard and enhanced DBS checks for individuals can only be requested by a company/organisation that is looking to hire you. This has been stipulated by the Disclosure & Barring head office.

ENHANCED
The highest level Disclosure for those training, caring for and supervising children/vulnerable adults
