DBS Update Service Checker
What is the DBS Update Service?
The DBS Update Service is an official online subscription offered by the Disclosure and Barring Service. It allows individuals to keep their Standard or Enhanced DBS certificates up to date, and lets employers quickly check if anything has changed since the original check was completed.
Without this service, there’s no way to know if someone’s criminal record has changed unless a new DBS check is carried out. However, when an applicant is registered for the Update Service, their certificate remains valid as long as no new information has been added. It’s a fast, secure, and cost-effective solution for ongoing safeguarding compliance.
Note: Basic DBS checks cannot be registered for the Update Service.
The Challenge with Manually Checking on the Update service for each certificate
For employers, checking the DBS Update Service manually one certificate at a time can be time-consuming and error-prone. Employers must log in individually for each applicant to verify any changes - a process that can quickly become a burden, especially as your workforce grows.
Relying on staff to complete these checks regularly introduces the risk of missed updates or delays. Even a small oversight could leave your organisation exposed to safeguarding or compliance risks.

Why Regular Checks Matter
Regular monitoring of DBS certificates is vital to ensure that staff remain suitable for their roles - particularly those working with children or vulnerable adults. A change in criminal record status could mean an individual is no longer appropriate for their position.
Automated DBS update monitoring protects your organisation, maintains trust, and strengthens safeguarding practices - without adding administrative burden.
