As we enter Spring 2025, AccessNI is implementing major updates that will significantly impact the application process for disclosure checks.

These enhancements are designed to improve security, streamline identity verification, and ensure compliance with evolving regulations. Whether you are an employer, an AccessNI signatory, or an individual applying for a disclosure check, it is essential to understand these changes and take the necessary steps to remain compliant.

This blog covers the key updates, including the transition to digital identity verification, the discontinuation of third-party accounts, the phasing out of Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs), and how to stay protected from recruitment scams.

Online DBS Checks | Important updates with AccessNI Digital Identity Verification – Upgrading to NIDirect Accounts

One of the most significant changes coming to AccessNI is the mandatory requirement for all applicants to create and verify their own NIDirect accounts. This shift aims to enhance security and accuracy in the application process.

Why is this important?

  • Ensures a single, verified source of applicant identity information.
  • Reduces errors and inconsistencies in disclosure applications.
  • Enhances security by preventing fraudulent applications.

With this change, applicants’ personal details—name, address, and date of birth—will be automatically transferred from their NIDirect account to their disclosure application and locked to prevent manual changes.

This move ensures that all information is accurate and reliable.

What Employers and Applicants Need to Do:

  • If you haven’t already upgraded your NIDirect account, do so immediately to avoid processing delays.
  • Employers must ensure their employees understand this requirement and provide assistance where necessary.
  • Individuals applying for AccessNI checks should create their own accounts and verify their identities in advance.

By taking these steps, you can avoid complications and ensure a smoother application process.

Online DBS Checks | Important updates with AccessNI End of Third-Party Accounts – What Employers Need to Do

Currently, some organisations use third-party accounts to process disclosure applications on behalf of employees. From Spring 2025, this will no longer be possible.

How does this affect employers?

  • Each applicant must create their own NIDirect account to apply for a disclosure check.
  • Employers can assist in setting up accounts, but they cannot create applications on an employee’s behalf.
  • Third-party accounts used for processing multiple applications will be phased out.

What are the next steps?

  • Ensure all employees have their own email address to create an NIDirect account.
  • Assist employees who may need help with account setup.
  • Modify internal HR and compliance processes to align with these changes.

Failure to act now may result in application disruptions when the new process is fully implemented.

Online DBS Checks | Important updates with AccessNIBiometric Residence Permits (BRPs) No Longer Accepted

A major change is that Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) will no longer be accepted as valid identification for AccessNI disclosure applications. Instead, applicants must now use an eVisa and provide a share code for verification.

What does this mean for applicants?

  • If you previously used a BRP, you must now apply for an eVisa through the UK Home Office.
  • Employers must request the applicant’s share code to verify their eVisa status.
  • This aligns AccessNI’s processes with the UK’s move towards a fully digital immigration system.

If you’re an employer hiring individuals who previously used BRPs for verification, ensure they understand the transition and apply for an eVisa in advance.

Online DBS Checks | Important updates with AccessNI Beware of Recruitment Scams Involving Fake AccessNI Checks

Recruitment scams are becoming increasingly common, especially scams requiring job seekers to pay for fake AccessNI checks. These scams often involve fraudulent upfront fees for supposed background screening processes.

How to Spot and Avoid Recruitment Scams:

  • Check eligibility – Not all jobs require an AccessNI check. Ensure that the role genuinely requires one.
  • Be cautious of outdated terminology – Terms like “CRB check” (which is now obsolete) may indicate a scam.
  • Verify the employer – Only registered bodies and legitimate employers can process AccessNI checks.
  • Check costs – A Basic check costs £16, while Standard and Enhanced checks are £16 and £32 respectively. If asked to pay excessive fees, be wary.
  • Contact AccessNI directly – If in doubt, confirm with AccessNI whether an organisation is legitimate before making any payment.
  • Fraudsters often prey on job seekers during peak hiring periods. Always verify the legitimacy of a request before making any payment for background checks.

Online DBS Checks | Important updates with AccessNI Conclusion

These AccessNI updates introduce significant improvements in identity verification, application security, and fraud prevention. Employers, signatories, and applicants must act now to ensure a smooth transition.

  • Upgrade to a verified NIDirect account – This is now a mandatory requirement for all applicants.
  • Stop using third-party accounts – Each applicant must create their own NIDirect account.
  • Use eVisas instead of BRPs for ID verification – Ensure employees obtain their share codes for verification.
  • Stay vigilant against recruitment scams – Be cautious of fraudulent requests for upfront payment.

Staying informed and compliant with these changes will ensure a seamless experience for all involved in the disclosure process.
