Basic DBS Check

A Basic DBS Check is available to everyone regardless of their profession.

What is a Basic DBS Check?

Processed through the Disclosure and Barring Service, a Basic DBS check is a criminal record check with the lowest level of disclosure, available for candidates living or working in England or Wales. Basic DBS checks only contain details of unspent convictions according to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. If there are no unspent criminal convictions, the results of the online DBS check will simply state that there are no such convictions. A spent conviction will not be disclosed on a basic DBS check.

Who Needs a Basic DBS Check?

Basic online DBS checks are designed to enable employers to confirm if a prospective employee has any current, unspent convictions which might be relevant to the job they are recruiting for. Self-employed workers may also complete a DBS online application in order to help them build trust with potential customers or clients, particularly if they work in a field that requires home visits.

A basic DBS check can be requested for any job position or purpose and will be carried out if the individual provides their consent. This is different from standard or enhanced DBS checks, which can only be requested for very specific job roles that involve working with children or vulnerable people.

Are you an Employer looking to submit multiple basic DBS applications?

How to Apply for a Basic DBS Check

We offer two ways to process your Basic DBS online applications - one for employers and one for individuals.

Account system for employers: We provide an IDSP-accredited, fully managed service for employers requiring multiple online Basic DBS checks via our unique account system.

Our innovative system allows employers to submit multiple online Basic DBS applications as well as require their candidates to ID verification online with the British/Irish passport. This way no manual ID verification of original documents will need to be undertaken separately. The manual ID verification route will continue to be available for employers who wish to do so. Employers can monitor their progress through their own online portal. Results are often received online within 24 hours. The information provided here is submitted directly for processing via the Disclosure and Barring Service, which reduces turnaround times.

Online application for basic DBS checks for individuals

Individuals can make a personal Basic DBS online application upon providing proof of identity (passport, driving licence) and proof of address (utility bill, bank statement) to their ID verifier (e.g. a potential employer). Candidates can also opt to add on the electronic ID verification if they have a British/Irish passport so that no manual ID checking will be required, however an ID verifier will still be required to make the hiring decision. These are some of the sectors that require a Basic DBS check:
